Does Made in Europe have a future?

“The factory should not only be a place of production, but also a laboratory of ideas and a model of society.” — Adriano Olivetti

As supply chains stretch and globalized production shows its limits, European industry is looking to take back control. In Milan and Turin, two cities with a long industrial history, factories, workshops and laboratories are rethinking the way of producing: closer, more flexible, more resilient.

This exploration takes us behind the scenes of Made in Europe, where manufacturing models and supply circuits are being redesigned. Between craftsmanship, industrial innovation and the circular economy, how is Italy adapting its industry to new global challenges?

3 examples of notable immersions:

IMMERSION 1

Stellantis — The revival of a key industry in Europe

The European automotive industry is undergoing major changes: electrification, semiconductor crises, relocation of critical components. Stellantis, heir to Fiat and a major player in the sector, is restructuring its production system by bringing certain manufacturing stages back to Europe and by focusing on new industrial alliances. An immersive visit will allow us to understand how an industrial giant reorganizes its production chains to secure its supply and strengthen its independence from external markets.

IMMERSION 2

Brioni — Luxury craftsmanship facing the challenges of relocation

In the Brioni workshops, a reference for high-end men's suits, the challenge is to maintain exceptional know-how while integrating innovations into the production chain. Far from the logic of hyper-industrialization, Brioni has chosen to relocate selectively: by integrating hybrid processes combining traditional craftsmanship and new technologies, the company secures its production while maintaining unique know-how. The challenge is not simply to produce in Italy, but to invent a more flexible and resilient manufacturing model there.

By revisiting its manufacturing processes, the company is not content with maintaining know-how, it is adapting it to current requirements: a shortened chain that secures production, a gradual integration of new technologies without denying artisanal excellence, and a repositioning on added value rather than volume, a key lever for other industries facing the same challenges.

IMMERSION 3

La Scala in Milan — The entertainment industry

Behind the curtains of the Teatro alla Scala, another industry is playing out, that of large-scale tailor-made manufacturing. While the opera is one of the most prestigious in the world, it is also a place where unique expertise is perpetuated: here, sets, costumes and accessories are designed and manufactured in workshops where high fashion, carpentry, carpentry, sculpture and technical engineering coexist.

But La Scala is not only a temple of the past, it is also a production laboratory that must meet a major constraint: completely renew its sets and costumes for each new production, within short deadlines and with absolute quality requirements. This logic of just-in-time production, where each element is custom designed and cannot be standardized, raises broader challenges: how to reconcile traditional know-how and streamlining processes? How to preserve an artisanal heritage while responding to increasingly strong economic and logistical constraints?
