“
The place is only 33 years old but the spirit of the place dates back to the first expedition of its creator, the activist and pacifist Satish Kumar. Founded in 1991 in Devon, England, Schumacher College is a one-of-a-kind institution, recognized for its holistic and ecological approach to education. Inspired by the ideas of the economist and philosopher E.F. Schumacher, the author of Small is Beautiful, the college places sustainability and personal transformation at the heart of its teachings. Hidden within the Dartington Hall Estate, a community dedicated to art, sustainable agriculture, and education, this institution attracts students and researchers from around the world.
It offers master programs and workshops ranging from social resilience to agroecology, themes related to spirituality and permaculture. What sets Schumacher College apart is its experiential teaching approach. Students are not mere bystanders but are actively involved in community life and the management of the environment around them. The college draws on a broad range of world-renowned thinkers and experts, such as Vandana Shiva, Joanna Macy, and David Orr, who contribute their knowledge and experience on global issues of ecology, social justice, and sustainable development.
